Awareness and First Aid

Cold, wet weather makes roads more dangerous.

Here’s ER24’s guide to staying safe and avoiding accidents while driving in tricky winter conditions.

Why take extra precautions when driving in winter?

Environmental factors such as rain and fog can reduce visibility and tyre traction, increasing the risk of skidding or aquaplaning. Coupled with issues such as defunct traffic lights, faded road markings, and potholes, drivers need to be extra vigilant in winter. Potholes are already a challenge, but they become even more dangerous when hidden under water or mist.

How to stay safe on the road this winter:

  • Stay alert and avoid distractions: Put the phone away and do not text and drive.
  • Slow down: Drive cautiously, especially in rain, fog, or areas prone to snow and frost.
  • Keep your distance: Increase your following distance to at least four seconds behind the vehicle ahead.
  • Use headlights wisely: Always turn on your headlights in low visibility. Avoid high beams in fog, as they reflect off the mist and reduce your ability to see.
  • Maintain your vehicle: Check your tyres, brakes, lights, and wipers regularly.
  • Know when to stay home: If the weather is extreme, postpone your trip if possible. Safety should always come first.

If an accident does happen or you witness one while driving, it’s best to stay calm and not panic. The second step is to park somewhere safe, then turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers. Finally, immediately call emergency services.
