Awareness

Slips and falls are a hidden winter danger.

Here’s your guide to staying safe, especially for kids and the elderly, who are more at risk of serious injury.

What you can do to prevent falls this winter:

  • Reduce bulky clothing: While it keeps us warm, layers can restrict how fast we can move to prevent falls.
  • Wear appropriate footwear: Opt for shoes that have rubber soles and sturdy support around your ankles.
  • Make your home slip-proof: Placing a non-slip mat at your entrance, wiping the floor immediately after you spill and making sure your home is brightly lit can go a long way in preventing slips inside the house.
  • Perfect your walk: Rainy and wet conditions are not ideal for fast-paced walking, take your time, take shorter steps and look where you are going at all times.
  • Handrails and walking sticks: Remember to hold on to handrails or use your walking stick to prevent tripping.

Sometimes, even being prepared can’t stop a fall. If you are with someone who has had a serious fall, do not move them; rather, call an ambulance immediately. Support them by keeping them calm and warm while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

By following some of these measures, you can prevent unnecessary trips to the hospital this winter. Should you find yourself in an emergency, call ER24 on 084 124 - we don’t hibernate and are available rain or shine.
